OFFICE HOURS:

W - F 9th period (4:00 - 5:00 pm) in LIT 306 and by appointment.

PREREQUISITES:

Undergraduate course in number theory and a course in complex variable theory

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course will be in analytic number theory. Topics covered will include: proofs of the prime number theorem (analytic and elementary), the Riemann zeta function and its zero-free regions, analytic study of arithmetical functions, and the prime number theorem for arithmetic progressions.

I will use my own notes for the course. From time to time, I will give talks in the Number Theory Seminar (Tue, 4-th period, 10:40 - 11:30 am, in LIT 305) on topics related to the material covered in the course with the view of getting students exposed to research problems.

NOTE: The topics I have chosen for MAS 7215 are the most fundamental in analytic number theory. Also this material that would be covered in MAS 7215 would help in discussing a whole range of possible topics in analytic number theory in MAS 7216 in Spring 2010.

TEXT:

No assigned text. I will use my own notes. A number of texts will be given as references.

GRADING:

The course grade will be based on four to five homework assignments.

ACCOMODATION FOR STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES:

Students requesting classroom accommodation must first register with the Dean of Students Office. The Dean of Students Office will provide documentation to the student who must then provide this documentation to the Instructor when requesting accommodation.
